Aging Candidates

April 16th, 2008

I’m not sure that this is really politically correct, but the editors over at PopPhoto.com have taken the liberty of showing us what our current presidential candidates might look like in four years. Now, who am I to say, but I think they made McCain and Obama look the worst. McCain actually looks like he got hit by a truck. But I guess he is the oldest of the bunch, so maybe they got it right.

Heroism Duly Noted

March 19th, 2008

I got this in an e-mail from my Aunt Katie in Tucson, and I thought it was hilarious:

A man is walking by the zoo when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to devour her right in front of the little girl’s screaming parents.

The man runs to the cage, hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the man brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has seen the whole scene, and addressing the man, says: “Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I saw a man do in my whole life.”

“Why, it was nothing,” said the biker, “really, the lion was behind bars and I knew God would protect me just as He did Daniel in the lions den long, long ago. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt was right.”

“I noticed a Bible in your pocket.” said the journalist.

“Yes, I’m a Christian and was on my way to a Bible study” the man replies.

“Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow papers will have this in first page.”

The journalist leaves. The following morning the man buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on front page:

“Right Wing Christian Fundamentalist Assaults African Immigrant and
Steals His Lunch.”

Pastor Tim regarding Eliot Spitzer

March 13th, 2008

Pastor Tim over at Grace Church in SLO had an interesting commentary on Eliot Spitzer’s fall on Wednesday. I thought it was very interesting, and certainly thought provoking. One of his more poignant statements was

We are all capable of something like this. None of us is beyond this.

That kinda cuts to the heart, doesn’t it? We’re all capable of being like him. And in fact we are. Romans 3:10 reminds us that there is no one who is righteous. We’re all sinners. A few verses later, Paul reminds us of this fact in Romans 3:23.

Had he refused to resign, I think he should have been impeached. So while I agree that it was right for Spitzer to step down, there’s no room for judgement on my part. I’m no better than he, and I’m certainly capable of what he did.

Aren’t we all?

The Fall of Eliot Spitzer

March 12th, 2008

Governor Eliot Spitzer has officially resigned today. He was the governor of New York, and it’s famous (or infamous) attorney general for a number of years. He went after corporate corruption, and his most memorable case (at least in my mind) was against Dick Grasso, the former chairman and CEO of the New York Stock Exchange. But it seems Spitzer himself wasn’t above corruption.

It was a shame to find out about his involvement in prostitution. What a sad thing for his family, especially his wife and three daughters. What a traumatizing event that must have been. I don’t know how people recover from shocking events like that. I’m doubtful that Spitzer will recover from this one.

Go Vote!

February 5th, 2008

If you’re an American citizen, and they’re holding elections where you live, don’t forget to vote today.

As my friend Jackson wrote:

Not only is this is a privilege; this is a responsibility.

So go take advantage of your privilege, and fulfill your responsibility.
